Direct Speech

Alexander Krupnov,
ICU President:

«As the mobile industry is one of the few parts of the private sector currently capable of providing an economic stimulus, governments need to ensure they adopt policies that encourage more investment in mobile services and networks. Wherever possible, governments should seek to create a stable regulatory environment to encourage spending on network infrastructure and services, stimulating economic growth»

Speech on GSMA's Leadership Summit (Barcelona, 16th February, 2009)

Andrey Skorodumov, ICU CEO:

«Telecom leaders called for governments to support the rollout of mobile broadband services to drive economic growth. Industry and the authorities must work together to find sustainable business models for mobile broadband. Mobile broadband might have the same deep changing impact on people's lives as basic mobile services have had»

Several operators are upgrading their networks this year with evolved HSPA (HSPA+) enabling 21 - 28 Mbps peak downlink data speeds, even higher later. LTE is the next step in the user experience and will further enhance more demanding applications such as interactive TV, mobile video blogging, advanced games and professional services. LTE will deliver significant efficiency improvements, more capacity, higher data speeds and reduced latency. And LTE is on track with global industry support and 26 operator commitments already, including 10 networks expected to launch in 2010»
